BioLinux Group Profile

BioLinux Group is a non-profit organization sited in Argentina, with the objective of researching, developing and implementing the free and open source technologies for its applications into health care environments.

The Problem

State of the computer science in the Area Health: According to our experience, several problems related to the informatics state and communication exists in the health area of Latin America. Some of the most important are: Under grade of informatics and scarce percentage of implementation of nets in hospitals. An only unique informatics system doesn't exist operative in the hospital neither regional net, with the consequent lack of standardization of communication protocols, division of applications, tools, etc.

A system of Clinical unique History doesn't exist to each other in institutions local sanitary, alone systems without integration. There is not unified implementation of computer hospital systems with handling of images and telemedicine. The software systems are in their majority proprietors, having been these developed by programmers or software companies, with high development costs and licenses. Besides this, it is evidenced a lack of presence of operating systems and tools low computer free software. Limited resources are observed as for the available hardware. The computerized main hospital areas correspond the office worker, the accountant and of billing. He/she doesn't put on emphasis in developments guided to the management and quality of attention.

Our vision of the hospital systems

The Hospital system is a group of sub-systems in dynamic balance: assistance system, administrative system, accountant, technician, managerial, among other. To be able to cover the basic necessities of a system hospital model, four computer primary sub-systems should be developed

Operating system bases and computer nets
System of Hospital Information (SIH)
Systems of Telemedicine
Administration Systems and Storage of Images (PACS)

The Group BioLinux has as objective the investigation and development in four o'clock you line, necessary for the normal operation of a hospital system, under the standards of the free software, guided to the hospital management and the quality of attention in health institutions. This makes the difference with the traditional systems.

With this objective we have formed Salud Libre site in 2002. The project has grown substantially with many lines of development and an Internet Portal Community hosted at www.saludlibre.org
